Hatfield was laid out around an aerodrome and it still drives like it. The A1001 Comet Way is a wide, fast spine with the town hanging off roundabouts either side, and the Galleria is built into the cutting underneath it.
Two populations generate most of the work. The business park and the trade units run vans; the university runs students with older cars and thinner tyres. Those are different jobs. A van needs the right load rating and it needs it today. A twelve-year-old hatchback needs somebody to say honestly whether the tread is legal, and often it is not.
South Hatfield and Roe Green are estate roads with speed tables and a lot of parking on grass verges. Verge parking is quietly hard on sidewalls — the kerb edge sits at exactly the wrong height.
A1(M) J3 and J4 bracket the district, so this is a straight motorway run from Potters Bar rather than a cross-country one.

What the legal limit actually is
1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, all the way round. Below that it is three penalty points and a fine per tyre. Wet braking falls off well before the limit, so 3mm is the sensible point to plan a replacement rather than the point at which you have already failed.
AL10: give us the road and the tyre size
Call and tell us where the vehicle is standing and what is on the sidewall. If the size has gone with the tyre, the make, model and year will do. We confirm what we are bringing before the van moves.
