AL9 service area
AL9 looks like commuter Hertfordshire on the map and drives like farmland. Brookmans Park and Welham Green have stations and a parade each; three hundred metres past either one you are on a single carriageway with no lighting and a hedge on both sides.
That is where the damage comes from. Wildhill, Water End, Bell Bar and the run out to Essendon are lanes with a soft, broken edge, and when two vehicles meet, one of them puts a wheel into it. We take more kerbed rims and split sidewalls out of this district than out of anywhere else on the same number of places.
The exception is Old Hatfield, which is a town centre problem — cobbles, a steep hill down from the station, and no space to put a jack anywhere sensible.
The A1000 runs the length of the district and joins straight onto base, so this is a short run rather than a trek.

Lane edges and split sidewalls
A sidewall that has been pinched against a kerb or a broken lane edge cannot be repaired, whatever the tread looks like. If you have felt a hard knock and the tyre is holding air, it is still worth having looked at before a motorway run. Send a photograph of the wall and we will tell you straight.
