AL6 service area
Eleven villages, no town, and a road network that predates every one of the cars using it.
AL6 is lanes. Ayot St Lawrence, Ayot St Peter, Ayot Green, Burnham Green, Harmer Green — single track in places, with flint verges, deep drainage grips at the edge and blind crests. Two things happen here. Cars meet on a bend and one of them takes the verge; or a tyre picks up a flint on a wet edge and loses air over the next day.
Welwyn village and Mardley Heath sit on the old Great North Road with the A1(M) alongside, so those are quick. Tewin and Tewin Wood, out on the Hertford side, are not — that is a proper drive through the lanes whichever way it is approached.
This is middle-distance ground for us. Nothing in AL6 is round the corner, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise.

Flints and slow leaks
Flint does not behave like a nail. It cuts rather than punctures, often on the shoulder where a repair is not permitted, and it frequently falls out again so there is nothing to see. If a tyre on a lane car needs air every week and no object is visible, it is worth taking off the rim and looking at the inside.
