Hertford is a county town with a medieval street plan and four rivers running through it, which means one-way loops, narrow bridges and very little space to work.

Gascoyne Way carries the through traffic and everything else funnels around it. On a job in the centre we need to know the street and, honestly, whether there is anywhere to stop — otherwise we end up shuttling equipment further than we should.

Bengeo climbs steeply north out of the town on Port Hill, and Sele Farm sits west above it. Both are residential and both are on gradients, which matters when a wheel comes off: chocks first, every time.

North of the town the A119 runs out through Waterford and Stapleford to Watton-at-Stone. Fast, rural, and the outer edge of what we would call a sensible run from Potters Bar.
