Southgate Circus is a proper circus — a full roundabout with the station in the middle of it and five arms feeding in. Everything in N14 is measured from there.
The A111 runs north from it toward the M25, which is what makes this district quick for us from Potters Bar. Oakwood, at the top end, is closer to base by road than it is to central Southgate by traffic.
The work here divides cleanly. On the main roads it is speed and debris. On the residential streets off Osidge Lane it is standing cars, slow leaks and tyres that have quietly aged out — plenty of them with good tread and cracked shoulders, which is a replacement whatever the depth gauge says.

Good tread, old rubber
Tyres harden and crack with age whether or not they are used. The four-digit code on the sidewall gives the week and year they were made. On a low-mileage car it is common to find eight or ten-year-old tyres with 5mm of tread and a shoulder full of fine cracks. Those are finished, and they behave badly in the wet.
