NW7 service area
Apex Corner is where the A1 and the A41 pull apart, and London Gateway is the first services on the M1 out of London. Between them, NW7 has more fast road per square mile than anywhere else in the Barnet half of this territory.
That is reflected in the work. Motorway and dual carriageway failures come in at speed with sidewall destruction and often a bent rim underneath. A services car park is at least a safe place to be stranded, which is more than can be said for the hard shoulder either side of it.
The Ridgeway and Highwood Hill are a different world half a mile away — old village, high hedges, schools, and a hill steep enough that everything is done in low gear. Copthall is playing fields and car parks; Mill Hill East is the redeveloped side, all new estate roads and shared surfaces.
NW7 comes off the A1 straight from base, which makes it one of the quicker London districts for us despite the distance.

Stranded at a services
Park in a bay rather than on the approach road, note the bay number and stay with the vehicle if you can. We fit in the car park, not on the slip. If the tyre failed on the motorway before you reached the services, tell us that too — the rubber that was run on will look different from the wheel that was not.
